About Beau Performance

I first started surfing at the age of 12 after moving with my family from Kent, to North Devon. My parents bought me a board and I began to learn how to surf, with instruction through lessons and from friends.

After a few months a friend put my name down for a local surf competition and although I don’t remember a thing from it, probably because they all absolutely smoked me. I just remember how much of a desire it gave me to want to improve and get to a level where I could compete with my friends and my peers.

From then on I applied my passion and dreams of being a professional athlete to surfing. Training, nutrition, studying surfing endlessly to get better as quickly as possible, and I used every contest as an opportunity for me to measure my progress.

After a year, the training began to pay off, I started winning some contests and picking up sponsorship from local surf shops who supported me with coaching and equipment, and at the age of 15 I signed a contract with Billabong.

In 2009 and 2010 I made it onto the British team to represent GB at the world junior championships in New Zealand and Peru. During my time on the GB team I gained exposure to a variety of different high level coaches, and learnt a lot about different ways of training for surfing.

From the age of 16-20 I worked at the surf school teaching a mixture of beginner and development sessions. Looking back at this time it was invaluable experience in learning how to communicate well with people and the different ways in which people of all ages learn new skills.

For the past 8 years I have been continuing to coach, working with the English surf team, assisting them with physical and technical preparation, as well as working for the RNLI as a beach lifeguard across North Devon. Lifeguarding has taught me a great deal about staying safe in the sea and also brought added responsibility, providing a duty of care to thousands of people using the sea in the summer, assisting in up to 60 rescues a day on busy days.

Throughout the past 12 years my desire to coach and understand the depths of human performance has always remained my passion, I have always been encouraged to pursue my passions and to do what I love. Therefore, 4 years ago I went back to study a foundation degree in sports coaching, health and fitness, before finally going on to university, graduating with a first class honours degree in strength and conditioning.

In 2020 I decided it was time to combine my first hand experiences in surfing with the dedicated further learning over the past 4 years in order to assist people with their surfing to the best of my ability.

Sessions are structured to fit your needs, whether there’s anything specific you would like to focus on, a goal you want to achieve, or you just want to use the session to discover an area of focus that will help your surfing.

Beau performance is about taking a holistic approach to training for surfing, considering 5 factors of performance that are applicable to every level of surfer from beginner to advanced. If you think of these 5 factors of performance as a pyramid, with physical preparation at the base, then technical, wave usage, tactical & finally psychological preparation. Each of these factors contribute a to a well rounded surfing performance and will vary in importance from person to person.

Discovering what areas you need to focus on will drive your surfing forwards, and ultimately lead to more consistent performances and fun surfs.
